A Scintillating "Evening with Friends" -- Illuminated by Disney's Fireworks, Laser and Water Show -- Helps Potential Recruits into Geriatrics See the Field in a New Light

In the blazing glow of Disney World's "IllumiNations" spectacular, more than 170 members of the AGS and their guests enjoyed the show, drinks, desserts, and one another's company - and helped potential recruits into geriatrics see the field in a new light during the 2010 Annual Scientific Meeting.

Disney's Epcot theme park - the venue for the "IllumiNations" fireworks, laser and water show set to music - was the venue for the AGS Foundation for Health in Aging's 2010 An Evening With Friends (EWF) fundraiser. An annual meeting favorite, EWF benefits the FHA's Student Researcher Fund which defrays the travel expenses of students who have been invited to present their research at a special student poster session during the meeting. A valuable recruitment tool, EWF helps introduce students to the opportunities and satisfactions careers in geriatrics afford.

"By making it possible for talented student-researchers to attend AGS' annual meeting, EWF gives them a unique opportunity to find out what it's like to work in this growing field," says Jan Busby-Whitehead, MD, Chair of the FHA's Board of Directors. "Attending the annual meeting, gives student-researchers a chance to meet -- and get to know -- geriatrics healthcare professionals and to learn about the important and rewarding work they do. As our country "grays," we need to recruit more promising candidates into geriatrics and EWF helps us do that."

At a table beside the lake, Carol Concia, and Bridget Reidy, GNPs from North Carolina and Michigan, and Verna Sellers, MD, and Henry Tripp, MD, geriatricians from Virginia and North Carolina, were mulling the impact of the new healthcare reform legislation, talking shop, and otherwise enjoying themselves.

"It's nice to be here," said Dr. Sellers, who became a Fellow of the AGS earlier in the day and was attending the meeting with her husband, Preston. "There's a nice atmosphere, and good company, and chocolate," she said, laughing. "And it's for a very good cause!"

This year's EWF raised more than $41,800 for the fund. The AGS and FHA thank Sanofi-Aventis for helping support this year's EWF.
